Job Description

About the team and the role

We are looking for a Legal Counsel to deliver commercially-oriented legal services, with a focus on construction law, to Sydney Airport (SYD). Opportunities will also arise to engage with matters concerning technology, services, energy, and utilities. These services must be provided promptly and cost-effectively, either through direct advice and assistance or by overseeing external legal advisors to ensure SYD receives appropriate guidance for achieving the best possible outcomes.

The Government Relations, Sustainability and Legal (GSL) business unit aids all SYD business units in various capacities, with responsibilities spanning a wide array of SYD’s corporate functions. The Legal Team, operating within GSL, handles all legal affairs, including contract management, dispute resolution, and compliance counseling.

Please be aware that this position is a 24-month fixed-term contract.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to

  • Offer legal services efficiently, proactively, and promptly to all business levels, encompassing written and verbal advice, drafting contracts and letters, managing litigation and other dispute resolution methods, participating in internal and external discussions, and negotiating with third parties and their legal representatives.
  • Identify potential legal risks related to SYD’s diverse operations and update the Senior Legal Counsel and senior management on important issues as required.
  • Stay informed about the legislative and regulatory landscape pertinent to crucial aspects of SYD’s operations, including tracking changes in relevant legislation and developing strategies, procedures, and policies in reaction to legislative updates for business implementation.
  • Participate in the formulation of corporate policies, initiatives, and goals as they pertain to the legal services rendered.
  • Update standard agreements to ensure they remain current and are written in clear language.
  • Guarantee compliance with the authorized corporate authority delegation in the signing of legal documents.
  • Examine and approve legal cost estimations.
  • Assess external advice/agreements and offer feedback where suitable.
  • Keep a supervisory eye on specific allocated external legal services.

About you

  • A minimum of 5 years of legal experience after admission, concentrating on construction law.
  • Possession of a Law degree and a valid practicing certificate.
  • Experience and expertise in assessing and reviewing external legal counsel and advising on significant legal matters.
  • Experience in infrastructure is strongly preferred.
  • Capability to handle numerous internal client cases to provide timely advice.
  • Capacity to be adaptable and flexible in response to evolving business requirements and demands.
  • Ability to function collaboratively within a small legal team and contribute initiative, energy, and enthusiasm to the position.
